Hear the Declaration of Independence read, as was commonly done in the 19th century, at the 1874 Courthouse. Afterwards, sign your own "John Hancock" to a copy of the Declaration that you may take home. The readings will take place at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

Learn how people of the 19th century used various herbs for medicinal purposes. This hands-on workshop will include how to properly harvest and preserve different herbs. Historic Washington State Park announces the annual summer concert series Music in the Park with the theme “An Evening of Jazz”. Enjoy an evening on the lawn of the 1874 Courthouse listening to live music from the past to the present. Bring your own lawn chair. In case of inclement weather, activities will be moved inside the 1874 Courthouse. What better way to spend a summer evening than music on the lawn, good food, and good friends? Jazz music has its roots in local spirituals and other type of songs from the 19th century. One local area musician named ScottJoplin of Texarkana influenced modern jazz music through his “ragtime” music. Join the community as they did in the past to enjoy evenings of great musical entertainment at Historic Washington State Park. Concert Lineup: June 21 – Majestic Jazz Band Majestic Jazz Band is a great local jazz band that has played in several local venues in Texarkana, Hope, and region. A group of talented musicians located in the Ark-La-Tex region that loved to share their love of jazz music. July 19 – William McNally William McNally is a ragtime enthusiast and performer of the music of Scott Joplin. McNally is the 2016 and 2017 champion of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and the first three–time winner of its New Rag Contest. He has several recordings including Chickens ‘n’ Kittens: a Ragtime Coup, which follows his interest in modern and classically trained ragtime composers. Learn more at www.williammcnally.com. 7/25/25 - 7/26/25 - 19th Annual Red River Heritage Symposium Teachers & Researchers Workshop - 9am-4pm

We are offering an all-day teacher and researcher workshop in conjunction with the 19th Annual Red River Heritage Symposium. This workshop will take place on Friday, July 25 with a morning program on Saturday, July 26. Lunch will be provided for both days. Saturday morning of the workshop will include a bus tour, sponsored by the Arkansas State Archives, along the path of the “Fort Towson Road” that the Choctaw Nation took on their way into modern-day Oklahoma. Workshop presenters will include staff from Historic Washington State Park, Arkansas State Archives, Fort Towson Historic Site, and the UALR Sequoyah National Research Center in Little Rock. Sessions will incorporate information on Choctaw removal and "Trail of Tears" topics into curriculum standards for the classroom. We encourage workshop participants to also attend the symposium on Saturday afternoon. Those attending both the workshops and symposium will receive a discounted price of $50. Pricing details are listed below. A total of twelve credit hours will be available for teachers to earn both days of the symposium. Register by July 23. Historic Washington State Park will host the 19th Annual Red River Heritage Symposium on Saturday, July 26, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s theme is “Trail of Tears in the Red River Region” and will focus on on the removal period of the Choctaw tribe as they traveled from Mississippi into southeastern Oklahoma and the impact that had on the Great Bend Region of the Red River.Specific topics and speakers will include: “Washington, Arkansas and the Trail of Tears” by Josh Williams and Chris Adams of Historic Washington State Park. “Choctaw and Chickasaw Removal Stories through southwest Arkansas”” by Dr. Dan Littlefield of Sequoyah National Research Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. “Indigenous Experimental Archeology at Choctaw Nation” by Dr. Ian Thompson of the Choctaw Nation Archeological Survey. “Documenting Choctaw Ancestors” by Mallory Covington of the Oklahoma Historical Society.The cost of attendance at the symposium is $20. Register by July 23 by contacting the park visitor center at 870-983-2684.As part of the symposium, an all-day Friday and Saturday workshop for teachers and researchers will take place on July 25 and 26, beginning at 9 a.m. Lunch is included on both days. Join us for a unique re-enactment of a Washington, Arkansas, court case from 1856: Illness and Influence: The Battle Over Joseph Crosby's Estate. This trial captivated the people of Washington and highlighted the skill and tradition of its legal practitioners, contributing to the town’s rich legal history throughout the 19th century.The evening will begin with a meal at Williams Tavern Restaurant and then you will proceed to the trial drama.
